What’s New: Intel today announced a collaboration with Inspur, Ruijie Networks and Silicom to design and develop new FPGA-based infrastructure processing unit (IPU) solutions that will deliver highly customized and programmable solutions to cloud and networking customers. This announcement advances Intel’s IPU vision, broadens and extends the IPU ecosystem, and accelerates the creation of a fully programmable network for customers to solve some of their greatest business challenges. Learn more about Intel® field programmable gate arrays at Intel’s virtual FPGA technology event on Dec. 6-9.

“Collaborating with these innovative partners extends the secure and programmable benefits of the IPU platform to a broader set of customers. Our combined work together with the ecosystem and leading cloud and communication services providers is enabling developers to realize the next chapter in data center architectures through ecosystem-enabled and tightly coupled CPU and IPU platforms.”

–Patrick Dorsey, Intel vice president in the Programmable Solutions Group
Why It Matters: At Intel Innovation 2021, Intel shared its vision of end-to-end programmable networks based upon open standards where the IPU is key to deliver new capabilities to the network, including telemetry, congestion control and traffic steering. By broadening the IPU ecosystem, customers will have access to solutions designed to create and leverage the benefits of a fully programmable network.

About the Collaboration: Inspur, Ruijie Networks and Silicom will design and develop IPU solutions based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology.

  • Inspur, China’s leading cloud computing and big data service provider, will build and design new IPU offerings using Oak Springs Canyon, Intel’s latest state-of-the-art FPGA-based IPU platform, which provides a high-performance, flexible and differentiated 2x100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) solution. As a result of this deep collaboration with Intel, Inspur can offer its customers a platform that leverages the IPU to increase data center efficiency, while providing flexibility needed for differentiation.
  • Ruijie Networks, headquartered in China, is dedicated to the digitization of all industries. Working with Intel, Ruijie Networks plans to use Oak Springs Canyon to extend Intel’s FPGA-based IPU portfolio with 100 GbE and 200 GbE options. The platform allows its customers to deploy a uniquely powerful combination of the Intel® Agilex™ FPGA  architectural advancements delivered with Intel® Xeon® processors to create the customized IPU solution optimized for their unique data center applications.
  • Silicom, an industry-leading provider of high-performance networking and data infrastructure solutions, continues its ongoing partnership with Intel to create a unique IPU based on the Oak Springs Canyon platform. Silicom realized the platform can offer customers a 2x100 GbE solution with the ability to customize, while still delivering the outstanding performance, programmability and portfolio of technology that only Intel can provide.

About the IPU: An IPU is a programmable networking device designed to enable cloud and communication service providers to reduce overhead and free up performance for central processing units (CPUs). With an IPU, customers better utilize resources with a secure, stable programmable solution that provides greater security and isolation to both services provider and tenant.
