After receiving the high approval from Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (Toshiba) stringent testing of its Green JBOD VTrak J5960, PROMISE Technology, a pioneer in data storage solutions, will be partnering with Toshiba to run a joint demo at ISC High Performance from May 30 to June 1, 2022 at Messe Hamburg, Germany (booth D405).

ISC High Performance this year is focused on bringing the most critical developments and trends in High Performance Computing (HPC), machine learning, and high performance data analytics to conference attendees. In addition, ISC High Performance is aiming to create an ‘environment sustainability’ event to tackle the challenges of climate-change. J5960 is a “green designed” high-density and high-capacity (supports over 1PB per chassis) 60-bay JBOD that balances performance and energy-saving in order to fulfill growing demand for environmental sustainability in high tech industries. VTrak J5960 will enhance HPC systems employing tiered data storage as the bulk of active data can be stored on the high capacity HDD based J5960, while ‘Hot’ data uses flash drives. This complimentary arrangement improves overall performance, cost and energy savings.

“The creation of VTrak J5960 support customers worldwide to help manage rising data demand,  icreasing energy costs, and sustainability compliance while no compromising to performance, ” said Alice Chang, Chief Marketing Officer of PROMISE Technology. “As a leading storage company with more than 30 years expertise in data storage solutions, our persistent goal is to offer customers the best total cost-of-ownership solutions to tackle the business challenges in today’s world.”

“To serve the ever growing data storage demand, Toshiba develops reliable hard disk drives such as our MG Series - Enterprise Capacity Hard Drive. But to operate the HDDs in cloud- and enterprise datacenters, equal performant and reliable server- and JBOD chassis are required. With the PROMISE VTrak J5960 we evaluated an excellent solution to run storage capacities in the petabyte range” added Rainer W. Kaese, Senior Manager Business Development for Storage Products at Toshiba. “We are excited to present our common solution at the International Supercomputing Conference 2022 in Hamburg.”

Toshiba lab report confirming VTrak J5960 GreenDNA

The VTrak J5960 high-density SAS enterprise JBOD storage solution balances high performance and high capacity in a robust, quiet, energy efficient, cool running system. VTrak J5960 features fully redundant I/O modules, power supplies, and cooling units – in an all hot-swappable design - for constant high availability to support non-stop computing environments, even in the event of component failure.

With the reduced energy intake and redundancy that nonetheless still produces high performance output, VTrak J5960 benefits users with efficient maintenance, safer operations, and lower power consumption. Toshiba lab tested VTrak J5960 and Toshiba 18TB HDDs with a high-accuracy professional power analyzer (R&S HMC8015) for precise measurement of the power consumption. The results show an excellent value about 100W for a dual IOM JBOD without drives. About 300W as “idle with drives” is also an amazingly low value, as other 60 bay-JBODs start from 400W and more. Moreover, a lambda factor of 0.96 means that the ratio of reactive power generated by the power supply units is extremely low. The J5960’s default setting puts all SAS drives in “Idle” when not accessed for two minutes; the result is significantly reduced power consumption in the various drive configurations.

Toshiba was able to show aggregate performance of the 60 HDDs of up to 15 GB/s sequential throughput and over 30,000 of random IOPS. The efficient cooling and airflow management of the JBOD supports long lifetime and high reliability of the HDDs by keeping full operational temperatures lower than 14 degrees Celsius above ambient temperature.

In addition to the outstanding power saving, J5960 also provides ease of setup and configuration, and include hardware features designed for simple maintenance such as easy access to all HDD while remaining in the rack, cable-less design, IO-Module (IOM) replacement on the front, hot replacement, and a global support service.
