This December, Samsung Semiconductor attended the UNFCCC* COP28 held in Dubai, UAE. The 28th Conference of the Parties, also known as COP28, hosted by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC*) brings in more than 200 countries around the world to discuss solutions to suppress annual increase in global temperature. At the event, Samsung Semiconductor along, with IT leaders, was at the kick-off event for the Energy Collaboration (EC***). The initiative, launched by the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC**), will aim to represent the semiconductor industry and draw out roadmap that may potentially lead to solutions in procuring low-carbon energy for the semiconductor industry.
□ Coming Together to Resolve Low-Carbon Energy Challenges At COP27, last year, Samsung Semiconductor took part in announcing the launch of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), a collaborative effort by the semiconductor industry to tackle emissions problems facing the semiconductor value chain. Moreover, as founding member and governing council of SCC, Samsung Semiconductor strongly supports the environmental effort and road toward Net Zero for the semiconductor industry under the vision to build “technology that makes technology sustainable.”
In this sense, the Energy Collaborative initiative was launched, organized by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) and McKinsey, with Samsung Semiconductor and other key industry partners. The two-year execution of the initiative will aim to analyze and derive tangible solutions for the semiconductor industry to potentially clear roadblocks in expanding low-carbon energy availability and access in Asia-Pacific region. Likewise, Samsung Semiconductor will engage in conversations to draw out solutions to lead the semiconductor industry to collectively aim for a common goal. □ Working together to Achieve Industrywide Net Zero Dr. Hwang, Head of Environment Team, attended the EC kickoff event and to support this collaboration and expressed the responsibility as industry leader to support this initiative. He said “We are glad to support this new initiative to further strengthen our efforts to expand of access to low-carbon energy for the semiconductor ecosystem.” He also went on to the anticipation for the initiative, saying, “The demand for sustainable energy has been rapidly increasing over the past few years” and “we expect that together with industry leaders, this initiative can lay good foundation stone toward Net Zero for the industry.”
The joining of the Energy Collaborative is another extension of the ongoing effort of the company on its journey toward Net Zero.
