A good movie keeps us guessing right up until the end. Is he going to make it out alive? Will they live happily ever after? Will she find out that he still loves her?

Suspense is maintained throughout a film by a series of twists, turns and missed connections. Unfortunately for Hollywood screenwriters, many of those plot devices no longer hold up in the Skype era.

Check out our list of 10 blockbusters that wouldn’t be the same if we’d been in the picture:

Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Juliet’s messenger never tells Romeo that she’s only faking her death – and that leads to a series of famously bad choices. A quick video call (or even video message) between the star-crossed lovers would have made Shakespeare’s most famous work much less tragic.

Harry Potter (2001)
The owls could’ve taken a break.

Catfish (2010)
A young New York photographer falls in love with a woman he met online to later find out that she is a completely different person. The movie and its spin-off MTV reality series proves that a video call is imperative to filter out the online dating imposters.

Singles (1992)
This 1990′s classic about Generation X and Grunge follows two people who are wavering on whether to commit to each other. He finally professes his love to her but the answering machine eats the tape. A video message would have saved everything.

The Shining (1980)
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Maybe if Jack had caught up with old friends via group chat he could’ve surpassed the worst case of cabin fever – ever.

Finding Nemo (2003)
It would’ve been a lot easier to find everyone’s favorite animated clownfish.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
With video calls, Tom Hanks’ character and Meg Ryan’s character could have met right away and wouldn’t have to wait until the end of the film to meet at the Empire State Building.

The Notebook (2004)
Separated by World War II, the young lovers in this mega-popular romantic drama could have just kept their relationship alive over video calls. It would have been a much less tear-filled path to living happily ever after.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
When Han Solo goes to visit his friend Lando Calrissian he is arrested by Imperial Forces awaiting his arrival. Would the plot  have changed had Lando been able to give a sly wink to his old buddy so he could steer clear? I guess we’ll never know.

Forrest Gump (1994)
If Forrest had just stayed in touch with Jenny virtually, he wouldn’t have had to wait for the bus for hours and tell his life story to every passer-by.
