INTRODUCTION
With quite a large number of first and third person shooters coming out in 2015 (noticeably Grand Theft Auto VI and Mad Max) and even some real time strategy titles) it's only natural for gamers around the world to start getting ready for them by getting new gaming peripherals such as keyboards, mice and headsets. Of course when it comes to gaming i think that there's nothing more important for gamers other than to own a good gaming mouse not only because that's what you'll be using all the time but also because it's perhaps the only peripheral that can improve your reaction times (important for online games mostly). Logitech has been around for well over 3 decades and in that time they released some good gaming mice which I’m sure many of you still own. However it wasn't until just recently that they began focusing a lot more in the design and manufacture of gaming mice (probably because of their relatively new Logitech Gaming brand) and today we'll be taking a look at their latest G402 Hyperion Fury model.
Focused on innovation and quality, Logitech designs personal peripherals to help people enjoy a better experience with the digital world. We started in 1981 with mice, which (new at the time) provided a more intuitive way of interacting with a personal computer. We became the worldwide leader in computer mice, and have reinvented the mouse in dozens of ways to match the evolving needs of PC and laptop users. Since those early days, we have expanded our expertise in product design beyond the computer mouse, with a broad portfolio of interface devices that are the “last inch” between you and your computer or your console game, digital music or home-entertainment system. With products sold in almost every country in the world, Logitech’s leadership in innovation now encompasses a wide variety of personal peripherals (both cordless and corded), with special emphasis on products for PC navigation, gaming, Internet communications, digital music and home-entertainment control. For each of our product categories, we study how our customers use their digital devices, and then our designers and engineers set their sights on how we can create a better experience with those devices – richer, more comfortable, more fun, more productive, more convenient, and more delightful.
Although it can only go as high as 4000DPI (which is quite low compared to the 12000DPI of the G502 Proteus Core) Logitech markets the G402 Hyperion Fury as the fastest FPS gaming mouse in the market currently something which they have accomplished by pairing their Delta Zero Sensor Technology (we've already seen it with the rather new G602) which increases precision with their Fusion Engine Hybrid Sensor which basically makes use of an gyroscope and an accelerometer to "predict" the heading/position of the mouse (a technology also used in satellite navigation). Because of these two sensors and the 32-bit ARM processor the G402 Hyperion Fury can track movement up to well over 500IPS (inches per second), has a report rate of 1ms/1000Hz and has a max acceleration of 16Gs. Design-wise the G402 is not far apart from the G502 and G602 models but although it's much different from what Logitech offered in the past like the G502/G602 models we doubt that will be an issue.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
A large G402 picture is placed at the front of the box right beneath the company logo and above the model name.
The features and specification lists are placed on both sides in 11 languages.
A medium-sized picture of the G402 is placed at the rear and used to showcase it's features in 6 languages.
Unfortunately the bundle is very basic so aside the G402 Hyperion Fury Gaming Mouse you're also getting the user guide and a warranty information paper.
THE G402 HYPERION FURY
The G402 Hyperon Fury is a medium size gaming mouse so its plastic/matte/glossy black enclosure weighs 108g and measures 136mm in length, 72mm in width and 41mm in height (thickness).
On the left side of the mouse we find two fully programmable buttons, the DPI LEDs and the sniper button which reduces the DPI while pressed to allow for a more accurate aim.
The Logitech Game logo is placed at the center top of the mouse.
Two more programmable buttons are placed right next to the primary button (by default these are used to increase/decrease DPI).
The left side has a rubber coating applied to it which actually helps with the grip.
Logitech has used a soft clickable scroll wheel which although not the best we've ever encountered still it's very good and almost inaudible.
Four large pieces of Teflon are placed around the laser sensor at the bottom of the G402 Hyperion Fury.
Both the USB plug and the 2.1m cord are plain so nothing special here (some do prefer it this way however).
The G402 Hyperion Fury doesn't have a complex illumination system so we just have the G logo at the top and the DPI selection LEDs.
LOGITECH GAMING SOFTWARE
Since the G402 Hyperion Fury doesn't come with a CD inside the box you will need to download the latest version of Logitech’s Gaming Software from their support page as seen above.
Once you install and launch the software it will check for available firmware updates and if it finds one it will notify you and begin the update.
The procedure takes around a minute to complete and requires you to unplug and plug the mouse back in at the end.
As always the first tab allows you to choose between the onboard profile(s) or the ones stored in your PC which also detect installed games and configure the device accordingly for each (if supported that is).
The software of course also allows you to adjust the DPI settings, change the available DPI levels, program the buttons, change the polling rate, create macro commands and adjust the logo brightness and lighting pattern.
Logitech has placed two very handy tools which allow you to see how fast the mouse can move with and without the fusion engine enabled (we hit 1.6ms/63IPS without and 2.1ms/82IPS with the engine on) and to see which buttons you've pressed most inside a specific period of time.
CONCLUSION
The first thing people (especially gamers) check when looking for a new gaming mouse is the DPI so the G402 Hyperion Fury with its 4000DPI is far from the fastest model in the market today and that may affect potential buyers in a somewhat negative way. Surprisingly enough however the ability to track up to 550IPS gives the G402 Hyperion Fury excellent accuracy and speed. Of course it really goes without saying that you will never be able to hit such IPS especially since we were only able to go up to 82 while moving the mouse around like wild but in the end that number depends largely on the type of mouse pad/mat you're using and its size so since the one we used here although very good measures just 44cm diagonally some people with larger ones will certainly make it up to 100IPS and perhaps even more. In the end leaving out amount of IPS you can hit the technology used in the G402 Hyperion Fury improved accuracy and that's really what matters. The design of the G402 is also surprisingly good since we got used to it just after a couple of hours and although it lacks a weight adjustment system we think that Logitech has placed just the right amount (although i would have probably liked it quite a bit more if it was slightly heavier).
When we finished testing the G402 Hyperion Fury and started checking around to see for how much it goes currently we were expecting quite a hefty price tag because it left us with very good impressions overall. Still Logitech has always offered a good price/performance ratio with their products and with a current price tag of just USD42.79 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and 44.99Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) you just can't go wrong with the G402 Hyperion Fury. Does that mean this is the best gaming mouse out there currently? Well we'd be lying if we said it was but it's a very good gaming mouse for its money (i guess it's not a coincidence that we've seen it in many LAN parties so far) and that is more than enough for it to secure our Golden Award.
