sennheiser hd 620s review a

As far as I'm concerned, the audio market is divided in 3 different people categories, those who care about vocals, those who care about lows (bass) and those who want to listen to music as it was recorded at the studio (neutral/reference). So basically, depending on the music genre and your personal tuning preference you should pick the right pair of headphones and well, just like with everything else in the electronics market that might be easier said than done. Last June Sennheiser released the HD 620S closed-back headphones and finally I was able to get my hands on them a while back.

We live and breathe audio. We are driven by the passion to create audio solutions that make a difference. Building the future of audio and bringing remarkable sound experiences to our customers – this is what the Sennheiser brand has represented for more than 75 years. While professional audio solutions such as microphones, meeting solutions, streaming technologies and monitoring systems are part of the business of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG, the business with consumer devices such as headphones, soundbars and speech-enhanced hearables became part of the Sonova Holding AG group of companies in 2022, who have licensed the Sennheiser trademark for this purpose.

The HD 620S are closed-back headphones which according to Sennheiser can replicate the spatial imaging of loudspeakers while keeping listening sessions secluded. This is achieved thanks to its reference-grade 42mm angled dynamic transducers (38mm diaphragm) which produce a frequency response of 6Hz-30kHz, 150Ohm impedance, 105dB sound pressure level, <0.05% (1 kHz / 90 dB SPL) Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and 6.25mT magnetic field strength. Even though I haven't had much experience with Sennheiser headphones (only gaming ones) the company claims that the HD 620S take the best aspects from both the 500 and 600 series, so my expectations are set quite high from the get-go.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

sennheiser hd 620s review 1t

As it's typical the front of the white, blue and grey box of the HD 620S is taken by the company logo and a large product picture.

The main specifications are printed on the right side of the box.

At the rear of the box Sennheiser has printed the main product features in 6 languages.

Once you open the box, you'll see that the headphones are placed inside a formed piece of cardboard.

Aside the HD 620S and their screw-on 6.3 gold plated adapter inside the box you'll also find a storage pouch and the safety guide.

THE HD 620S

The HD 620S are made of aluminum, plastic and faux leather and weigh 670g.

As for size the HD 620S are medium ones.

Sennheiser has placed their logo on the outside of the earcups and their name on the right end of the headband.

Typically, left and right markings are placed on the interior as seen above.

The faux leather dressed earpads are large in size with sufficient padding.

Above you can see an exposed view of the right earcup (marketing material).

The headpad is also dressed in faux leather and sufficiently padded but for some strange reason the gap in the middle tilts more towards the left side.

Each side extends up to 55mm (110mm total) via 18 increments.

Both the 3.5mm and 6.3mm plugs are gold plated.

sennheiser hd 620s review b

Sennheiser places extra weight in the spatial/soundstage aspect of their latest HD 620S (so I decided to start with this) and well, I partially agree with them. Yes, the soundstage may not the widest I've ever encountered but it's way above average and well, that never became a problem for me during the 3 weeks I ended up testing the HD 620S. Where the HD 620S do great is bass/lows levels and highs/vocals so no matter what music genre you end up listening to you should be more than satisfied. Mids are crisp and balanced but again, highs and lows are clearly emphasized more and personally I liked that. The soft and comfortable earpads on the other hand (and the lack of pressure which is also why they are so comfortable) don't offer the best audio isolation so if you're near a sound/noise source you'll probably wish this wasn't the case. As for build quality Sennheiser is not among the top audio manufacturers around for no reason and so the HD 620S don't disappoint in that regard either.

Currently the Sennheiser HD 620S retails for USD349.95 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 282.39Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) thus it’s priced just a tad higher compared to the older HD 600 model. All said and done I can’t say anything bad about the HD 620S. Yes, it may not produce the widest soundstage and isolation could be better, but it does extremely well in every other aspect and that’s why it gets the Golden Award.
