   As far back as i can remember whenever me and my friends went to the beach or the mountain to relax there was this one guy who'd always bring a portable freezer along with him. Sure, it was just a regular portable freezer (and a seemingly old one at that) which kept our drinks relatively cold for a while (largely thanks to the ice placed in the freezer) but at least for us back then it was a rather big deal. Well, that was almost two decades ago and just like with most things in the market today there are many different kinds of portable freezers one can get so since roughly a month ago i was out looking for one my eyes fell on the latest SH-C22 Car Refrigerator by VEVOR.

   The SH-C22 Car Refrigerator by VEVOR is a compressor model meaning it requires power to achieve temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius (at least on paper). The compressor has a power consumption of 45W, can run both in DC (12-24V) and AC (110-240V) modes and has a three-way battery protection (should adequately protect against depleting your car's battery). The SH-C22 has an interior capacity of 22 litres (23 quarts), features an interior LED light and an external USB port (for charging of portable devices) and can be controlled both via the digital touch panel located on top and a smartphone app (Bluetooth pairing). So, on paper the SH-C22 seems to deliver on everything I’d want from a portable freezer/refrigerator so let's see if that's really the case.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

VEVOR ships the SH-C22 inside a plain cardboard box that just has a product drawing on both the front and rear.

The model selection is placed on both sides (strangely enough there is no selection on my box).

As expected, the refrigerator is wrapped inside a plastic bag and placed between two foam spacers.

Along with the SH-C22 Car Refrigerator inside the box you'll also find a power adapter with wall and car cigarette lighter cables and the user manual.

THE SH-C22

The SH-C22 is currently available in white-grey and white-blue colors and measures 597mm in length, 320mm in width and 335mm in height.

From the digital panel located on the top right you can turn the unit on, control its temperature, make it available for pairing, use the child lock function and of course use the USB port to charge your portable devices.

Both sides of the SH-C22 feature built-in handles making it very easy to carry.

The compressor is located just under the digital control panel and at the front we find the power port along with a replaceable fuse.

Once you open up the unit, you'll see the main compartment and an ice cube tray which could come in handy.

A drain port is also present at the base of the main compartment.

For maximum flexibility i suggest pairing the SH-C22 with a portable power station like the 296Wh 300W model by VEVOR (review soon).

BLUETOOTH APP

Once you install and launch the app it will detect all compatible devices and list them.

The app allows you to turn the SH-C22 on/off, adjust the temperature (-20/20 Celsius), enable eco mode (reduced power consumption with reduced cooling efficiency), enable/disable child lock, switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius and unpair it from the app.

There's also a battery mode in the app but that probably applies to other models and not this one.

From the settings tab you can adjust the min and max temperatures and pretty much everything else from the main tab.

You can also check all paired devices.

CONCLUSION

   Although I ended up testing the SH-C22 Car Refrigerator by VEVOR for just over a full week it mostly delivered on everything it’s advertised for. Build quality is very good overall, interior space is more than enough to fit 7-8 1.5 litre bottles, the digital control panel works well (keys did require more force a few times but that’s something touch keys do in general) and obviously I also liked the fact that you can control the unit via your smartphone. In terms of cooling however even though VEVOR claims that the SH-C22 can go down to 0 degrees Celsius in just 5 hours that wasn’t my experience with it. I did most tests outdoors during which I used the portable power station VEVOR send over and well even after 5 hours temperature was at around 9 degrees Celsius. This isn’t a bad number since it’s plenty to keep drinks cold but at the same time it’s not close to the advertised one. When testing the SH-C22 indoors using a regular power socket temperature did drop down to 8 degrees after 2 full days. Again, not close to the advertised numbers but this number obviously has largely to do with the ambient temperature and since these days it was well over 36 degrees Celsius where I live (I obviously didn’t test the SH-C22 with the AC on) it makes sense that temperature didn’t drop beneath that (keep in mind that I have 2 mini bars in the office and with the AC’s off at the most they go down to 10-11 degrees).

   Right now, the SH-C22 Car Refrigerator by VEVOR retails for USD246.42/223.99Euros (VEVOR) but you can actually get it for less, thanks to a 5% discount coupon offered by VEVOR (VVMH5%OFF). Overall, the SH-C22 may not be the best portable refrigerator in the market today but it looks nice, has plenty of space, provides good cooling and can be operated both by its digital panel and your smartphone and that’s why I highly recommend checking it out if you’re out in the market for one.
