sharkoon c70g rgb review a

If someone had told me even just 10 years ago that at some point there would be PC cases in the market made out of wood I probably wouldn't had paid attention. Still today there are quite a few PC cases in the market that feature wooden parts and even though they are clearly not for everyone if you happen to like wood or if your home or office has wooden furniture one such case would feel right at home. The Rebel C70 RGB by Sharkoon combines aluminum, wood and RGB lighting and well, that's what we'll be looking at today.

Since 2003, Sharkoon has been developing “Designed in Germany” gaming products, which are popular in the worldwide gaming community due to an exceptional combination of high-performance and affordability. Stylish PC cases, precision keyboards or mice and comfortable gaming chairs – all these represent an elegant blend of high-quality design and modern technology. Numerous awards from the international trade press underscore the performance and quality of the Sharkoon brand.

Much like many other PC cases today the Sharkoon Rebel C70G RGB (available in black and white colors) features a side tempered glass panel (C70M mesh side panel version also available), mesh top, removable front/bottom dust filters, dual-chamber design (removable front end) and a total of four 120mm PWM ARGB pre-mounted fans. What the C70G RGB has that many others don't is a mesh fascia made of aluminum and wood, adjustable graphics card holder and an 8-way 3-pin RGB controller (22 effects stated in the product page, 20 on the box). In terms of available interior space, the Rebel C70G RGB can be equipped with up to ATX sized motherboards, up to eleven 120mm fans (or five 140mm fans and five 120mm fans) or 3 radiators (240/360mm), three 2.5" and three 3.5" drives, 165mm tall CPU coolers, 400mm long graphics cards and up to 270mm long power supply units. Yes, the C70G ARGB may not be the largest midi tower out there, but it does seem to tick most boxes so let's get close and personal with it.

SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

The C70G RGB arrived inside a black and white box the front of which is taken by a product drawing and the main product features.

Both the product features in 14 languages and the color selection is what's printed on the sides.

Typically, the case is wrapped inside a piece of cloth and placed between 2 foam spacers.

Along with the C70G RGB case inside the box you'll also find several cable ties, y-fan splitter, several cable straps, 2 cable holders, motherboard speaker, 4 plastic bags with mounting screws, 12 rubber pads (for drive installation), tightening bolt, warning paper and a smaller paper pointing to the online user manual.

THE REBEL C70G RGB EXTERIOR

Measuring roughly 495mm in height, 479mm in length and 230mm in width the 9.3Kg heavy C70G RGB is a somewhat large midi tower.

As expected, the entire right side panel is made of tempered glass.

The mesh fascia is made of wood, aluminum and plastic.

Pulling it from beneath allows you to access the removable air-filter and the 3 pre-installed ARGB fans (can replace these with three 140mm ones).

The I/O is located on top and includes the on/off button, RGB effects button, two USB-A ports, USB-C port and an 3.5mm port.

Looking at the top panel we see that it's almost entirely perforated.

At the rear we find the 4th 120mm ARGB fan, 7 expansion slot covers and the PSU area.

The case sits on 4 tall feet and has a removable air-filter underneath.

THE REBEL C70G RGB INTERIOR

Just like most PC cases nowadays the lack of front drive trays means that the interior is quite spacious.

I already mentioned this but even though there are three 120mm fans at the front you can replace them with 140mm ones.

Sharkoon has equipped the C70G RGB with a graphics card holder which works well (you can remove the entire vertical bracket in order to install up to three 120mm fans or an 360mm radiator/AIO).

There are 7 openings on the mainboard tray (no rubber grommets however).

Sharkoon classifies the C70G RGB as a dual-chamber tower but do keep in mind that the PSU shroud is perforated (the far right piece is removable if you decide to mount a front radiator or right side fans/radiator). Worth pointing out is that Sharkoon also has a vertical GPU kit available for the Rebel C70G RGB.

Behind the motherboard tray we find two vertical brackets (3x3.5"/3x2.5") and the PSU area.

BUILDING THE SYSTEM

As always, the purpose of this section is not to build a functional system but rather to showcase what you can expect from the case at hand in terms of interior space.

To mount the PSU, you’ll need to use the bracket as seen above and then slide it in from the rear of the case.

Regular ATX sized motherboards leave quite a bit of space around.

With room for 165mm tall CPU coolers you can mount most models currently in the market (I am building a quiet server using the C70G RGB so the Noctua NH-L12Sx77 is more than enough).

If you don’t mount anything in the right side of the case, you can mount even up to 400mm long graphics cards.

NOISE LEVEL TEST

After giving it much thought we decided on performing noise tests with each PC Case we receive by placing our ExTech HD600 vertically on top of each case to measure the noise levels emanating from the pre-installed fans at both 50% and 100% with the help of a fan controller (if the case doesn't have one, we use our own).

CONCLUSION

sharkoon c70g rgb review b

Sharkoon has created a good number of unique looking PC cases over the years and the Rebel C70G RGB is probably among them. The wooden fascia looks great and the 4 ARGB 120mm pre-installed fans certainly add to looks. Airflow levels are also very good even with just these 4 fans but the ability to add 7 more or 3 radiators is certainly going to appeal to many people. The graphics card holder is also a good addition (would be nice to see that from more models) and as for interior space 400mm long graphics cards, 165mm tall CPU coolers and 270mm long power supplies are certainly good enough numbers for a midi tower. Finally, being able to mount three 3.5” and three 2.5” drives and having versions with either a tempered glass side panel or a mesh side panel is also something we don’t see a lot lately with similar sized models.

At the time of this review the Rebel C70G RGB retails for 124.94Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) a price tag which is quite balanced for what you’re getting. At the end of the day the Rebel C70G RGB by Sharkoon may not be the best in its class but it looks great, has a spacious interior, and is priced well so the Golden Award is in order.
