INTRODUCTION
High capacity USB flash drives have become as essential to many people as wrist watches so it's not really strange that we keep getting many emails and FB messages by a large number of our readers asking for more such reviews. We have stated quite a few times in the past that we also support having such reviews online since we believe that USB flash drives are not really getting the same attention as other storage media (these things cost money too right?). Unfortunately although prices have dropped significantly we've yet to see affordable 256GB/512GB models and from what we can tell it may actually be quite a while until we do. Still since 64/128GB models are undoubtedly the most popular models right now in the market primarily because they combine respectable capacity at very tempting prices today we will be taking a look at the latest HyperX Fury 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive by Kingston.
Kingston Technology Company, Inc. is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of memory products. Kingston designs, manufactures and distributes memory products for desktops, laptops, servers, printers, and Flash memory products for PDAs, mobile phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players. Through its global network of subsidiaries and affiliates, Kingston has manufacturing facilities in California, Taiwan, China and sales representatives in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand, India, Taiwan, China, and Latin America.
The Fury line of products by Kingston is the third line we've seen under the HyperX flag and is ment to be the entry level solution for gamers who simply can't afford the higher-end models but are still after good performance levels. To be more specific according to Kingston the HyperX Fury USB 3.0 flash drives can hit speeds of 90MB/s in read and 30MB/s in write so although certainly nothing impressive still they are quite good. Differences however also expand to the materials used so compared to the DataTraveler HyperX 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive which we tested over 3 years ago and featured a nice aluminum-rubber enclosure the Fury 64GB model features a rather simple and far less durable plastic enclosure. Needless to say that with most USB flash drives in the market featuring plastic enclosures this didn't come as a surprise to us (besides although made with hard plastic the enclosure is quite sturdy) especially since we all wanted to see how it performs.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
Just like the majority of USB flash drives in the market the package is very simple so aside the clear plastic cover at the front we also see the 5 years warranty, HyperX logo and the drive capacity.
At the rear you will find warranty information and the drives barcode, part number and serial number.
Just the drive and a HyperX sticker are placed in the package (again no lanyard).
THE HYPERX FURY 64GB
The plastic body of the HyperX Fury USB 3.0 flash drive is 60.23mm long, 21.40mm wide and 9.80mm thick (the drive weighs 8.76g).
Once again we placed the HyperX Fury drive right next to several others we have here to see just how large it is.
At the top of the drive we see the available capacity while at the bottom Kingston has placed their HyperX logo.
The company name is placed at the rear right side of the drive above a color changing area (probably for genuine purposes).
The Fury USB 3.0 flash drives use a cap to cover the USB plug which when used you can mount at the rear right over the lanyard hole.
Kingston has engraved the capacity and serial number of the drive on the USB connector (one more thing that proves you have a genuine Kingston product).
TEST BED
TESTING METHODOLOGY
Since flash drives are basically plain storage media devices just like solid state drives and hard disk drives we are using almost the same testing methodology to successfully record the achieved performance numbers. The benchmark suites used are HD Tach RW (Read Speeds / Long Bench 32mb Zone Testing), HD Tune Pro (Read speeds), Sisoftware Sandra Pro (Read / Write speeds), AIDA 64 Engineer Edition (Average Linear Read / Random Read speeds), Crystal Disk Mark x64 (100MB-1000MB Read / Write speeds) and finally ATTO (Max Read / Max Write speeds). Every test is repeated a total of 6 times after which the average performance numbers are recorded into our charts (0 = we were unable to complete that test).
All tests are performed with our main rig running Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Service Pack 1 complete with every update until September 11th 2014. As always for comparison purposes in the charts you will also find many other flash drivers which have been tested using the same exact test bench as the one in this review (we really can't keep every flash drive we get forever and also even if we could testing them all again and again would simply not be possible).
TEST RESULTS - AIDA64 / ATTO
TEST RESULTS - HD TACH RW / HD TUNE PRO
TEST RESULTS - SISOFTWARE SANDRA PRO / CRYSTAL DISK MARK X64
CONCLUSION
I can't really begin to count the number of products I’ve gotten my hands on by Kingston but what i can say is that more often than not we find that their products exceed their stated performance values something which also happened in this review since the HyperX Fury 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive managed to reach read speeds of up to 231MB/s (178MB/s in ATTO) and write speeds of up to 145MB/s (41MB/s in ATTO). These numbers are still far from the ones we recorded years ago when we tested the DataTraveler HyperX 128GB USB 3.0 drive but they are much better compared to the ones reported by Kingston so we have no complaints here. I would prefer a rugged body instead of a regular plastic one since it doesn't seem that it can take a beating but i do understand that Kingston needs to cut some corners to make their Fury line competitive so again no problems (it's not like most USB flash drive enclosures are made with other materials).
The HyperX Fury line of products by Kingston has but one role and that's to offer a very good price/performance ratio so if the price isn't right then this is all for nothing. Well while I’m typing these lines the HyperX Fury 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive retails for just USD29.99 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 33Euros inside the EU (Amazon.co.uk) so we feel that the price is right. The only slight issue we can think of is that the just a tad more expensive ($2 more in the USA) M70 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive by Silicon Power which we had with us last week performs slightly better and comes with a lifetime warranty so at least for USA residents that seems like a better choice in all. Overall however Kingston has released a very good flash drive in the market worthy of our Golden Award.
