INTRODUCTION
Gaming headsets have always been about two things, audio quality, both in regards to you (via the left and right speakers/drivers) and to people on the other side talking with you (via the microphone) and design. Still that doesn't mean gaming headsets can't carry other important features and so today when out in the market consumers are also looking for other things such as wireless connectivity, battery life and of course RGB lighting. Needless to say, audio quality is indeed our primary concern when testing gaming headsets but we really can't avoid taking into account important secondary features. CORSAIR recently updated their popular Void line of gaming headsets to include the Void RGB Elite Wireless model which has been with us for almost a week now.
Founded in 1994, CORSAIR has grown from pioneering the high-performance DRAM market into one of the world’s leading providers of high-performance PC peripherals and components. CORSAIR offers a complete range of products to equip gamers, enthusiasts and e-sports athletes, including mechanical keyboards, precision gaming mice, wireless headsets, high-performance components that gamers use to build gaming PCs, and the CORSAIR ONE fully-integrated gaming PC. With a company-wide commitment to quality, innovative design, advanced features and high performance, CORSAIR products have won thousands of media and industry awards, earning their place in gamers’ hands and PCs following years of development and engineering by a team dedicated to building great products they themselves would want to use.
The brand new Void RGB Elite Wireless model doesn't only look almost identical to the Void Pro RGB Wireless SE model which we reviewed a while back (review here) but it also shares many features with it including the low-latency 2.4GHz wireless connectivity (40 feet / 12 meters range), 16 hour battery life, dynamic RGB lighting system, durable aluminum frame and the Dolby headphone 7.1 USB surround card. Some of its internal hardware components however are not quite the same and this includes both the two 50mm custom tuned high-density neodymium dynamic drivers which now deliver a frequency response of 20HZ-30HZ with 116dB sensitivity and 32KOhms impedance (20HZ-20KHZ with 107dB sensitivity and 32KOhms impedance for the Pro RGB Wireless SE) and the discord certified omni-directional microphone which features a frequency response of 100HZ-10KHZ with -42dB sensitivity and 2KOhms impedance (100HZ-10KHZ frequency response, -38dB sensitivity and 2KOhms impedance for the Pro RGB Wireless SE model). So basically, the main difference between these two models has to do with audio quality and so without further delay let's find out if it's worth upgrading to the brand new Void RGB Elite Wireless model.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
The front of the box is taken by a large product picture, the company and iCUE logos and the system compatibility (PC/PlayStation 4).
On the left side we find a new motto by CORSAIR.
Both the contents of the bundle and the system compatibility are printed at the base of the box.
Turning the box around we find yet another product picture right next to the product features and specifications in 8 languages.
Along with the Void RGB Elite Wireless you're also getting a USB wireless receiver/transmitter, USB to micro USB charging cable, microphone foam windscreen, safety leaflet, warranty guide and a quick start manual.
THE VOID RGB ELITE WIRELESS
Just like the Void RGB Pro Wireless SE the Void RGB Elite Wireless is also a light-weight headset (for all of you wondering our new headphone stand is by KÖNIG & MEYER).
Weight aside however the Void RGB Elite Wireless is still a mid-sized headset.
CORSAIR has once again placed their logo on the exterior of both earcups as seen above.
Both the power on/off and mute buttons are placed on the exterior of the left earcup while the jog dial (controls the volume and EQ/Dolby features) and the micro USB charging port with its status LED are placed on its base.
Same as before the omni-directional boom microphone is flexible and has a mute LED at the front.
Left and right markings are placed on the interior of the headset just over the earcups.
The plush foam used on the large earpads is dressed with microfibers.
Both earcups can fold to allow for easier storage of the headset.
The headpad is also very soft and also features a good amount of padding.
You can extend the headband up to 35mm on each side (70mm total) via 9 visible increments.
CORSAIR has used the same 2.4GHZ USB receiver/transmitter as the Pro version which is roughly the same size as a USB flash drive.
ICUE SOFTWARE
Typically, you can download the iCUE software from the CORSAIR website seen above.
Once you launch the iCUE software it will detect your compatible peripherals and list them on the top right.
The first tab after you click on the Void RGB Elite Wireless allows you to adjust both the volume for the microphone and the sidetone feature (allows you to hear yourself as well) and enable 7.1 virtual surround sound.
From within the lighting effects tab, you can change colors and use one of the 15 available effects.
The iCUE software also comes ready with 5 equalizer presets (you can of course also make your very own).
From the drop down menu the iCUE software allows the end user to monitor the status of the system (battery life included), use instant colors, perform firmware updates and adjust various secondary settings.
Here you can see some of the available colors of the Void RGB Elite Wireless.
CONCLUSION
Even though compared to the very good Void RGB Pro Wireless SE model the brand new Void RGB Elite Wireless produces crisper and more "vivid" mids and highs the difference is far from what we'd call phenomenal (as for bass levels they both perform roughly the same and produce a very good amount of deep bass). The Dolby 7.1 surround sound feature (positioning audio) also performs nearly in the same exact way as with the Pro SE model but probably due to the improved drivers of the Elite it does feel slightly "livelier" and more accurate. On the other hand, battery life actually turned out to be just a tad worse compared to the Pro SE model and so we were unable to surpass 14 hours of continuous use but even so it's far from a bad number (you can always disable the earcup LEDs to increase battery life). As for the RGB lighting system as you can easily tell from our pictures it's very basic just like with the Pro SE model and even the more recently released Virtuoso RGB line so not much to see in that area really. All said and done you do need to keep in mind that the Elite Wireless model was never meant to be worlds apart with the Pro Wireless model in order to act as a replacement for consumers who already own the latter.
The brand new Void RGB Elite Wireless Premium Gaming Headset by CORSAIR follows on the footsteps of its predecessor even in the pricing department and so currently you can get it for just USD99 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 119.90Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de). Granted just like its predecessor the Void RGB Elite Wireless may not be the best all-around wireless headset in the market but it does strike a very good balance between audio performance, features and price (certainly better compared to its predecessor) and for that it gets our Golden Award.
