INTRODUCTION
Yesterday Ubisoft Montreal officially released Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon (we received a copy a few days earlier) which is without doubt one of the very few game titles that have ever caught me off guard with their rather unique content and not so much with their graphics (in this case at all). You see this time over Ubisoft designed and released a game with very little eye candy (compared to today’s games) but with several clear references to some of my all-time favorite movies like the Terminator, ROBOCOP, Cyborg, Aliens and the Predator and like if that wasn't already awesome enough ontop of that Michael Biehn from The Terminator and Aliens (has played in several other blockbuster movies including The Abyss, Navy Seals and The Rock) has given his voice to the main character. I know that to some people these lines may seem weird but people around my age who know very well what I’m talking about will agree that there's no better way to enjoy such an amazing game than to play it using all the latest gaming peripherals and that's exactly what we did starting with the latest GUNGNIR gaming mouse by Tesoro.

After the very good SHRIKE HL2 Tesoro is launching the GUNGNIR gaming mouse which is actually both a step down in terms of features/specifications but certainly a step up in terms of design. So this time over Tesoro has placed a total of 7 buttons on the GUNGNIR and has opted for an 3500DPI optical sensor featuring a resolution of 6400FPS with a maximum speed of 60ips at 20Gs of acceleration. Now normally such specifications are not very impressive but combined with the design of the GUNGNIR and it's very unique gliding properties Tesoro just might have a possible best seller in their ranks. So let’s take a closer look to the GUNGNIR gaming mouse for all you to see what we are talking about.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
Unlike the SHRIKE this time over Tesoro has used a closed box with a product image, the Tesoro logo and a genuine sticker at the front.
A still of the product from the left side is placed on the left side of the box right above the list with the contents of the bundle.
Another picture of the product this time taken from the right is placed on the right side and right above the system requirements table.
At the rear we see the features list written in 9 languages, the specifications list and a large product picture taken from the rear.
The front actually opens up to reveal the GUNGNIR gaming mouse behind a clear plastic cover while on the inside of the front cover Tesoro is showcasing the units control panel and lightning effects.
The bundle is quite basic and so aside the GUNGNIR gaming mouse you are also getting a software CD (since the device is new there are no updates online), quickstart guide, registration paper and a warranty paper.
THE GUNGNIR
At first glance the design of the GUNGNIR reminds us of countless vehicles in sci-fi games (Vanu Sovereignty people rejoice) but lucky for us this is rather small measuring just 12.46cm in length, 7.51cm in width and 4.2cm in height.
There are two thumb buttons on the left side as expected.
The Tesoro logo is placed at the rear right between two LED stripes.
Two DPI selection buttons are placed at the top.
The scroll wheel is very soft, inaudible when used and features orange illumination.
Two more LEDs are present at the front (look a lot like foglights).
At its belly the GUNGNIR has two very large Teflon feet.
The 3500DPI optical sensor has a resolution of 6400FPS and can reach a maximum speed of 60ips with 20Gs of acceleration.
The GUNGNIR features a braided 1.8m cable that ends on a gold plated USB connector.
CONTROL PANEL
From the control panel you can assign functions to all 7 available buttons and the scroll wheel, create new macros, set the illumination colors corresponding to each of the 5 available profiles, adjust the 5 different DPI increments, set the polling rate, configure the shooting speed of the primary buttons and of course assign each configuration on one of the 5 available onboard profile slots.
Unlike the SHRIKE however the GUNGNIR has a much better illumination feature (although the illumination of the two forward LEDs can't be adjusted).
CONCLUSION
As already mentioned we mostly used the GUNGNIR with the latest Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon but that aside we also used it with PlanetSide 2 and HAWKEN (two of our favorite F2P online titles).Well the 3500DPI optical sensor may not be state of the art and so at first we were all thinking about how well the GUNGNIR would perform (some thought it would be the same as the Lua by ROCCAT) but thanks to its rather impressive gliding properties (mainly due to the weight and the two very large Teflon feet) it really feels a lot faster. The design of the unit is also quite impressive and surprisingly easy to get used to while the illumination feature is very good compared to other units like the SHRIKE but i still can't figure out why Tesoro only made it apply for the three rear LEDs and not the front two ones as well.
Since we received an engineering sample of the GUNGNIR gaming mouse naturally it's not available currently (or at least not widely) but according to Tesoro it has a recommended retail price tag of €39/$49 which means that it will probably retail for less once launched. Now since Tesoro has not been around for long we can't really say that they have proven themselves when it comes to the durability of their products so we can't comment on that (we will after a few years) but what we can say for certain is that in terms of performance the GUNGNIR is perhaps the best sub-5000DPI optical gaming mouse we've ever used and simply because of that it gets our Golden award.
