INTRODUCTION
Having tested and used over 100 mice to date two things matter for me, shape and tracking performance (in that order most of the time since tracking performance matters very little if your hand is not comfortable with the design/shape of the mouse). RGB LED lighting may not be a crucial "element" when choosing a gaming mouse but we all agree that looks do matter quite a bit for many people and so as expected nowadays most products launched in the gaming peripherals market pack that specific feature. So, in conclusion from all of the above for a gaming mouse to be successful and cover the needs of most consumers out there it should offer grip (shape), tracking performance (optical/laser sensor) and looks (design/RGB lighting). RIOTORO may be a somewhat new player in the market but they've released quite a few interesting products lately including the Aurox Prism Ultra Precision Gaming Mouse.
Founded in 2014, Formed by Enthusiasts, for Enthusiasts, RIOTORO manufactures the best Performance PC hardware, peripherals, and accessories in the industry with a goal of providing complete satisfaction for high performance seekers who build their own personal computers.
The Aurox Prism by RIOTORO (available in two versions, an all-black and an all-white limited edition) is based on a modified/tweaked version of the PMW3330 mid-range IR LED sensor by Pixart which can deliver a resolution of up to 10000DPI (dots per inch) as opposed to the 7200DPI of the standard sensor version. RIOTORO doesn’t mention anything about speed and maximum acceleration but the standard version numbers are 150 and 50 respectively (will update our review if these numbers are not accurate for this sensor version). RIOTORO has also equipped the Aurox Prism with a total of 8 programmable buttons (including a sniper button), 1000Hz (1ms) polling rate, aluminum front, rubber coated aluminum scroll wheel and a nice looking RGB lighting system (single zone breathe effect with 3 brightness levels).
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
The Aurox Prism is packed inside a small box the front of which is taken by a large product picture.
Both the contents of the bundle and the system requirements are printed on the left side in 6 languages.
Listed on the right side are the main product features.
Two more product pictures are located at the rear of the box and are used to showcase the 8 programmable buttons.
The mouse is safely placed under a clear plastic cover as seen above.
RIOTORO doesn't offer much in terms of bundle so aside the mouse itself you'll only be getting a user guide.
THE AUROX PRISM
The Aurox Prism is a small to medium sized gaming mouse that weighs 111g (158.7g with the cable) measures 134mm in length, 73mm in width and 48mm in height.
There are three programmable buttons on the left side of the mouse (the lower end button is the sniper button).
As usual the company logo is located at the rear.
The right side area is slightly extended to provide support to your hand.
Two DPI selection buttons are located at the top of the mouse.
As already mentioned in the introduction page the clickable scroll wheel is rubber coated and made out of aluminum.
At the base of the mouse we find 6 PTFE feet and the PMW3330 optical sensor.
The 1.8 meter long braided cable features a gold plated USB plug.
CONTROL SOFTWARE
You can download the latest version of RIOTORO's control software from their support page.
The software is pretty easy to use so from the first tab you can program all 8 of the buttons even with macros.
From the performance tab you can assign DPI for all of the 8 available DPI presets, set the sensitivity and acceleration levels and you can also adjust the polling rate.
Finally, from the lighting tab you can change the color of the LEDs, set the brightness level and adjust the speed of the breathing effect.
Although by default the software offers 8 colors you can replace them with the ones you'd like.
Here you can see some of the available colors.
CONCLUSION
The Aurox Prism Ultra Precision Gaming Mouse by RIOTORO was released back in early 2017 and although back then the PMW3330 LED sensor by Pixart was a very good choice today it has been surpassed by several of their own models. Still that’s not to say that the PMW3330 is not a good sensor since its specifications ensure that it should easily cover the majority of consumers in the market. It’s very fast, accurate and can now be found in many affordable models such as the Aurox Prism. The 111g heavy body of the Aurox Prism glides very well on most surfaces but for me it’s feels a bit lighter than it should. This of course is also due to the fact that the body of the Aurox Prism is not rubber coated and in the white version (we got both the black and white versions) things are slightly worse due to its glossy surface (some people may like a glossy surface but it’s not ideal for fast passed games). As for the single zone, single effect RGB lighting system well it may not compete with what we’ve seen lately from many manufacturers but it does look nicer than expected so if you don’t care much about effects and zones it should be more than enough to illuminate your desktop.
As mentioned earlier compared to 2+ years ago the PMW3330 LED sensor by Pixart can now be found in affordable gaming mice and the Aurox Prism with its current price tag of USD29.99 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 35Euros inside the EU (Amazon.co.uk) is one such model. Long story short 2 full years after its launch the Aurox Prism may not be able to compete with more expensive models but it’s still a very good gaming mouse for gamers on a budget and that’s also why it comes highly recommended by us.
