INTRODUCTION
Portable LCD monitors flew under my radar until recently, not because they are not useful but because I've always wanted the largest LCD screen possible to work on. Just imagine that back in the late 90's i had a 20 inch CRT model and in the early 2000's i got my very first 24 inch LCD monitor so from that to go to 14-17 inches has always felt strange. Even working on my laptops (all of which feature 17 inch screens) when on the road always felt off so i honestly never gave portable monitors a second thought. Since i started using and testing them last year I’ve actually come to appreciate their usefulness, at least when there's nothing larger around available for me to use. UPERFECT may not be one of the first portable LCD monitor manufacturers to come to mind but they've become quite popular lately and after their very successful 15.6" Y model i reviewed a while back (review here) today with me i have a larger 17.3" model.
UPERFECT was founded in 2017 as a brand based on decades of experience and research along with a sole vision to enlighten people in enhancing their display to 4K and improve their lives through our portable display technology. At UPERFECT MONITOR we understand and are fully committed to solving real-time challenges experienced by people worldwide by the provision of high-quality, individualized modern technological monitors with professionalism, dignity, and respect. We strive to understand the challenges that people are facing today and use our strong technology acumen to find exclusive and unprecedented solutions for them.
The portable LCD monitor i have in my hands today is a 17.3 inch model that features an 8-bit Full HD (1920x1080p) IPS HDR (2048 mode) panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz, input lag of just 3ms (GTG), 800:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and 178 degrees viewing angles. Of course, it also comes packed with numerous features including ECO mode, 5 different display modes, low blue light mode, auto power down, dynamic contrast ratio and FreeSync support (144Hz max if your card supports it). The 17.3" UPERFECT portable LCD monitor is also equipped with two 2W stereo speakers (1 on each side), 5 menu navigation buttons, two USB type-C ports (one PD18W), micro USB port, HDMI port and a mini DP port. Yes, this particular model doesn't feature touchscreen functionality but it does pack quite a few interesting features so let's check it out.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
UPERFECT uses a white box to ship the portable LCD monitor the front of which has a product picture while at the rear we see a few certifications and the made in China statement.
The screen is wrapped inside a synthetic cover and placed between two thin pieces of foam.
Along with the UPERFECT 17.3" screen inside the box you'll also find a faux leather stand/cover, USB wall adapter, 2 USB-C cables, HDMI cable and the user manual.
THE UPERFECT 17.3"
The 17.3" portable LCD monitor by UPERFECT measures no less than 405mm in length and 258mm in width (with the cover).
This is actually a magnetically attached faux leather cover which also acts as a stand so it's very useful.
This time over UPERFECT has used an 17.3" diagonal (440mm) screen based on an FreeSync IPS panel and also capable of displaying HDR content.
UPERFECT has used brushed aluminum for the enclosure of this monitor which as you can see looks very nice.
All 5 navigation buttons are placed on the left side of the monitor right next to the microUSB charging port and one of the two speakers.
On the right side we find the HDMI (should be v1.4) port, mini DP port, the two USB-C ports (top one is used to power the monitor whereas the bottom one is both for power and signal) and the 2nd speaker.
OSD MENUS
Via the 5 navigation buttons located on the left side you can enter the OSD menu to adjust brightness, contrast and color temperatures, set ECO mode (standard/movie/text/FPS/RTS), adjust sharpness levels, enable DCR (dynamic contrast ratio), set the aspect ratio, choose your preferred color temperature, pick the language for the OSD, enable auto sleep (power down), enable HDR, adjust the low blue light feature, set the volume and enable FreeSync and Overdrive.
VIEWING ANGLES / PICTURE QUALITY
Image quality is quite good for a portable LCD monitor with plenty of detail and relatively good color reproduction, still it could certainly be better.
We all know IPS panels have great viewing angles so things couldn't be any different for this 17.3" model.
TEST RESULTS
DATACOLOR SPYDERX ELITE MEASUREMENTS
By using the SpyderX Elite Colorimeter by Datacolor i measure both the color gamut (SRGB and Adobe) and the brightness levels of the monitor at hand.
Here you can see results for Color and Luminance Screen Uniformity (instead of just listing results at 100% brightness I’m listing all of them - 50/67/83/100%).
Datacolor rates monitors based on their overall results so it was decided to include this chart as well.
POWER CONSUMPTION
Power consumption may not be what most people look for when out to get a brand new monitor but at the end of the day it's still an important factor so i do hope this is of interest to some of you.
CONCLUSION
It’s quite clear from my Datacolor tests that the 17.3” HDR Full HD portable monitor by UPERFECT could be a lot better not just in terms of color accuracy but also brightness levels. Still, it’s important to remember that this is a portable LCD monitor so it’s not really meant for professional work like editing photographs or anything demanding like that. This is clearly a portable monitor meant for people who are looking for larger surface to browse, read their emails, type articles and yes even watch movies and play games. Honestly, I’ve been using this for over a month now and If I hadn’t run all these tests, I wouldn’t had known about its color accuracy (brightness levels on the other hand is easy to notice even from my viewing angles tests). Audio quality is actually quite good, sure two tiny stereo speakers will not blow you away but I had no issue watching series and movies on it. Finally features like OD (overdrive), landscape & portrait modes, HDR and FreeSync are certainly not common with many of the portable LCD monitors available currently in the market so it’s good that UPERFECT went the extra mile with those. The same of course applies with available connectors since Mini DP especially is something I haven’t seen in the past with a portable monitor.
The 17.3” HDR Full HD portable monitor currently retails for USD345.59/312.79Euros directly from UPERFECT (don’t forget to use the spin to win feature of their website to get an extra discount) so it’s not exactly affordable, especially if you take into account its test scores. That being said i do recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a 17.3” portable LCD monitor but if you can find something at around the same price point with better color accuracy (independent test scores, not manufacturer ones) then the choice should be obvious.
