eaton 5e 1600 gen2 review a

Uninterruptible Power Supplies exist to bridge the gap between unstable mains power and the sensitive electronics we rely on every day, stepping in the moment voltage dips, spikes, or outages occur. At their core, they combine a battery, inverter, and regulation circuitry to keep devices running long enough to save work, ride through short cuts, or shut down safely. Beyond simple backup, they also filter noise, smooth fluctuations, and protect equipment from the kind of electrical stress that shortens lifespan. Line‑interactive models add an extra layer of intelligence by correcting voltage without immediately draining the battery, making them ideal for homes and small offices. Today’s review is about a practical, no‑nonsense option in this category, the Eaton 5E 1600 Gen2 (5E1600UD).

Eaton’s mission is to improve the quality of life and the environment through the use of power management technologies and services. We provide sustainable solutions that help our customers effectively manage electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power – more safely, more efficiently and more reliably. Eaton’s 2019 revenues were $21.4 billion, and we sell products to customers in more than 175 countries. We have approximately 97,000 employees.

Eaton’s 5E 1600 Gen2 UPS expands on its line‑interactive foundation with a surprisingly robust electrical profile for its size, delivering 1600VA/900W through four Schuko outlets (this changes according to region) while maintaining stable output via Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) that corrects both under and over voltage without switching to battery. Its wide 140–300V input tolerance, 50/60Hz auto‑sensing capability, and 195–257V regulated output make it adaptable to inconsistent grids, while the HID‑compliant USB interface ensures seamless OS‑level monitoring without proprietary drivers. Internally, it runs on two 12V/7Ah sealed lead‑acid batteries with built‑in automatic testing, deep‑discharge protection, and cold‑start functionality, supported by up to 95% efficiency at full load to reduce heat and energy waste. The unit includes surge suppression, a 1.2-meter long Schuko input cable, LED status indicators, and compatibility with Eaton UPS Companion software, all wrapped in a compact tower chassis rated for 0–40 °C operation and backed by a full set of required safety certifications.

A product picture, company logo and some of the product features are placed at the front of the box.

The specifications table including 3 of the 6 available models is printed on the left side.

A few words about Eaton and a sticker with its serial number and barcodes are located on the right side.

Two product pictures, a few words about what UPS do and stickers with the serial numbers and barcodes are all placed at the rear.

Along with the Eaton 5E 1600 Gen2 inside the box you'll also find an instructions and safety information paper and the quick start guide (strangely enough there was no USB host cable in the box).

THE 5E 1600 GEN2

eaton 5e 1600 gen2 review 6t

The 5E 1600 Gen2 weighs 9.26Kg and measures 330mm in length, 133mm in width and 180mm in height.

One of the main differences between the original 5E line and the Gen2 one is the covered USB HID port located at the front next to the power button.

Both sides of the enclosure are perforated to allow for faster heat dissipation.

At the rear we find an 60mm exhaust fan and the 4 Schuko outlets (again, this varies according to region).

Four rubber feet and a few words about the unit are located at the base of the enclosure.

Replacing the battery pack involves detaching the top and bottom as seen above.

The 5E 1600 Gen2 has two 12V 7ah batteries inside.

UPS COMPANION SOFTWARE

For more control over the 5E 1600 Gen2 you should download the latest version of UPS companion.

Eaton has redesigned their UPS companion software and so in the initial tab we see a picture of the product and its status.

Shutdown, language, battery and switch off settings are all in the settings tab.

The program version, link to download the latest software version and available licenses are all placed in the info tab.

TESTING METHODOLOGY

In order to properly test UPS devices, I am simulating real world usage by using a TV and a short throw projector paired with a media player and even my newest Intel Core Ultra 9 285k test rig (mostly for stability purposes). Once again, power draw is not 100% fixed (fluctuates a bit, as expected) but the minimum and maximum numbers during all tests don't exceed 10W for the first and 20W for the latter (so do keep this in mind).

To simulate real power outages, I will be turning the corresponding power switch (circuit breaker) in the lab a total of 5 times (5 for each test), 3 of which I will pushing it back on immediately and 2 which I will allow a couple of minutes to pass. If any of the UPS models I test fail to protect the connected equipment (or fail to keep it running) I will be sure to mention it at the end of the review.

As for noise levels, I’ll be using the ExTech HD600 decibel meter placed 5cm away from each UPS model (results will not include beeping sounds coming from their internal speakers).

CONCLUSION

eaton 5e 1600 gen2 review b

In the end, the Eaton 5E 1600 G2 stands as a solid representative of what line‑interactive UPS units do best: smoothing out unstable mains power, stretching battery autonomy through efficient voltage regulation, and delivering dependable protection without the cost or complexity of online‑double‑conversion systems. While higher‑tier Eaton models like the 5S, 5PX, and Ellipse Pro/ECO naturally push ahead in raw endurance thanks to having larger battery packs and more advanced regulation stages, the 5E holds its own as the practical, value‑driven option in the lineup. For users who want the essential benefits of line‑interactive topology with straightforward integration and predictable performance, the Eaton 5E 1600 G2 closes the review as a balanced and reliable choice. Also worth pointing out is that Eaton has revamped their UPS companion software and well, it now looks current.

Currently the 5E 1600 Gen2 line-interactive UPS by Eaton retails for around 210Euros inside the EU (no availability inside the USA at the time of this review) and so it’s indeed a cost-effective unit. Yes, it may not keep your devices running for as long as some other, higher-end models by Eaton but it doesn’t have to. All it has to do is protect your system from electrical surges and give you more than enough time to shut it down and since it does deliver as advertised the Golden Award is in order.
