INTRODUCTION
As you can certainly tell the page is not 100% complete and because of that i plan to change the entire layout/design many times in order to try and reach the best possible outcome. Now although many of you are aware of my love towards watches (long time loyal Tag Heuer fan/owner) only a handfull of people know that for the past 2 years i was looking to get an everyday sports watch (and thus not something expensive) which would also cover my thirst for everything technology related. My first idea was to go out and get one of the all-time classic G-Shock watches manufactured by Casio but having owned one like 15 years ago i really felt like trying something else. Well after quite a long search our friends over at Diesel seem to have exactly what i was looking for, an everyday, cost effective LED watch unlike most watches in the market.
Diesel is an innovative international design company, producing a wide-ranging collection of jeans, clothing and accessories. Diesel is a leader in pioneering new styles, fabrics, manufacturing methods and quality control to guarantee an outstanding product. The company is present in over 80 countries with over 5,000 points of sale and more than 300 monobrand stores (200 of which are company-owned and the rest in partnership with local distributors).
Today we will be taking a thorough look on the DZ7164 digital LED watch by Diesel which happens to be the low end model of their LED line. The more high end DZ7092 is almost identical but sports an mirror like surface making it a more elegant solution for people who'd rather wear it when going out. Personally i like the DZ7164 more (more sporty) and that's why i chose that particular model to be with us today, however since taste is really something that comes down to personal preference so for all of you who may not feel the same i may also try to have the DZ7092 with us in the near future.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
The DZ7163/4 is a very simple watch so don't expect to find the bells and whistles found in other electronic watches.
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
The DZ7164 watch arrived safely packed inside a white leatherette case with the Diesel logo at the front.
For a strange reason the watch was not on the holder when i received it, however the package was complete.
Aside the watch you will also receive a very large user's manual (with instructions for every Diesel watch out there) and a large leatherette holder.
THE DIESEL DZ7164 LED WATCH
The entire top of the watch is made out of silicone and rubber so dust is certain to cover many parts of it (especially if you get the black version).
Diesel has placed their logo at the lowest end of the top which is also made out of plastic (and not crystal).
Two buttons at the right side of the watch allow you to set the time and if you want also a short message following the time display (i used NikKTech).
The Diesel logo is also placed on the band holder (notice how easy silicone attracts dust).
One of the things i always had a problem with was with the band of most watches which wouldn't stay beneath the holder. Diesel has found a solution for that (or at least i haven't seen it with another watch) issue by making the band larger at the end and since it's made out of silicone you can easily push it and secure it under the holder.
At the rear of the DZ7164 we see the all-time classic Diesel logo on stainless steel and as you can see the watch can withstand 3 Bar of water pressure (almost 30.3 meters).
Now what many owners of the DZ7164 seem to nag about is the low brightness of the LED which makes it very hard to see the time in broad daylight something which is not entirely accurate as you can see from the above image.
Of course in complete darkness the DZ7164 looks quite nice.
CONCLUSION
I've been using the Diesel DZ7164 LED watch for over a month now and i have to say that i really like the way it feels when i wear it, largely thanks to the silicone band. Of course i don't really like the fact that the silicone band attracts dust nor do i like the lack of a crystal top (can get scratched easier than the other watches i own) but overall it's a very nice watch for daily use. Certainly if you are looking to get an electronic watch with a plethora of usages like the G-Shock by Casio then the Diesel DZ7164 is certainly not made for you since it hardly does anything more than just display the current time and also a follow-up message chosen by you.
As we speak the Diesel DZ7163 LED watch retails for around USD120 inside the USA while in the EU you can find it for around 100Euros. Overall the price could be lower and you will probably find many noname LED watches for much less but let's not forget that this is Diesel we're talking about and not some random company so naturally you get what you pay for. Granted the DZ7164 may not be what i would call a complete watch since it only shows the time but considering that i have a large number of watches made by Tag Heuer, Condor, Accurist, Timex, Sector and other manufacturers that come with a variety of features and in the end i only use them to check the time i don't think most people need extra functionality for a watch. Bottom line i intend to use the DZ7164 for as long as possible, i think that alone says it all.
