Instead of chasing a single headline feature, the NEO iDSD 3 builds its identity around a full overhaul of iFi’s desktop architecture. The digital stage is centered on a custom Burr‑Brown DAC capable of PCM 768kHz, DSD512, and full MQA decoding, supported by upgraded op‑amps and polymer/WIMA capacitors that lower distortion and stabilize high‑frequency behavior. What sets this generation apart is the integration of JVCKENWOOD’s K2/K2HD processing, a system designed to rebuild lost harmonics and restore the natural overtones that give recordings their sense of realism where the technology focuses on lifelike clarity, warmth, and reconstructed detail. Amplification comes from the Diablo 2 lineage, delivering 2,532mW RMS (5,551mW peak) at 32Ω, giving the unit enough muscle for demanding planars while maintaining low noise for sensitive IEMs. Wireless performance is equally modern with Bluetooth v5.4 and full support for aptX Lossless, LDAC, LHDC, and aptX Adaptive audio codecs. PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
iFi audio ships the NEO iDSD 3 inside a white box that has a product picture at the front, their logo and the main product features.
A picture of the units’ rear is printed at the top.
The product features and specifications and contents of the bundle are all located at the rear.
The NEO iDSD 3 DAC is placed inside a piece of foam while the rest of the bundle is placed in separate cardboard boxes.
Along with the NEO iDSD 3 inside the box you'll also find the power supply, vertical stand with 4 silicon feet, aluminum remote control, 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter, USB-A to USB-B host cable, stereo RCA cable, two iFi audio stickers, after sales support paper and the quick start guide.
THE NEO IDSD 3
Measuring 214mm in length, 158mm in depth and 41mm in height the 916g heavy NEO iDSD 3 is identical to its predecessor, only now it comes in black color.
No matter how many times I see it, I think black is a much better fit for most home and studio setups.
Once again, we find the 2-inch color TFT display on the far left of the unit (auto-orientation).
The clickable volume wheel is located at the center of the unit.
On the far right we find the activity LED, 5 buttons and the 4.4mm and 6.3mm headphone outputs.
Taking a look at the rear of the unit here we find the XLR (balanced) and stereo RCA outputs, BNC clock input, coaxial, SPDIF optical, USB-B port and the power port.
The remote control iFi audio bundles with the NEO iDSD 3 (as with its predecessor) is one of the highest quality ones I've seen shipped with such a product. As for controls it has everything, you'll need to use the NEO iDSD 3 remotely.
If your setup looks just like mine then you'll probably want to position the NEO iDSD 3 vertically as seen above.
DISPLAY MENUS
Just like its predecessor the 2-inch color display of the NEO iDSD 3 indicates current volume level (mute icon also), input used and the various technologies used (like the XBass, XSpace and K2 and K2 HD technologies).
The menus have been re-designed for the NEO iDSD 3 (compared to the iDSD 2) but are largely the same so via the volume wheel you can adjust the digital filter, quality controls, gain levels, volume sync, Bluetooth voice prompts, sync the device with an external clock, control the line out volume, adjust display brightness, check details for the device (like installed firmware) and reset it to its factory settings.
The display auto-rotates depending on how you've placed the NEO iDSD 3, a very convenient feature.
NEXIS APP
Even though the NEXIS app by iFi Audio is somewhat basic it still allows you to connect the NEO iDSD 3 with your smartphone and/or tablet to control a few of its functions.
Just like with the NEO iDSD 2 the NEO iDSD 3 is listed as iFi Lossless Audio.
Again, not that many available settings but you can still select preferred audio codecs, and check firmware updates (locally or via the internet).
CONCLUSION
The NEO iDSD 3 strikes me as one of iFi’s most confident all‑in‑one desktop units to date. What stands out immediately is its natural, unforced tonality, the Burr‑Brown DAC gives the sound a smooth, organic character while still keeping detail crisp and intact. The upgraded analog stage feels genuinely refined, delivering tight, controlled bass, clean mids, and treble that stays energetic without ever turning sharp. Its power output is more than enough for the majority of headphones I threw at it during my tests, while the addition of aptX Lossless Bluetooth finally makes wireless listening feel like a real option rather than a compromise. I also appreciate how flexible the device is, balanced outputs, multiple digital inputs, and the analog-domain tuning tools (XBass II, XSpace, XPresence) let me shape the presentation without degrading it. If anything, the only friction points for me are that extremely demanding headphones can push its limits, its “one-box-for-everything” nature may not appeal to people who prefer separate DAC/amp stacks and of course its dependency on an external source since unlike streamer‑style units, it can’t operate as a standalone player (same “issue” I had with its predecessor). But taken as a pure DAC/amp with modern connectivity, the NEO iDSD 3 by iFi audio delivers a compact, confident, and sonically polished experience (thanks to the Burr-Brown & K2HD technology combo, it even surpasses the R9 in audio performance) that fits seamlessly into a desktop chain.
As I type these lines the NEO iDSD 3 by iFi audio retails for USD999/999Euros (ifiaudio.com) and so it’s priced just a tad higher compared to its predecessors at launch. The sole question is whether or not it’s a valid upgrade over the iDSD 2 and since it does improve on audio quality/resolution (lower noise floor, K2HD upscaling technology, 50% reduction in audio distortion) it clearly is and that’s why it gets the Golden Award.
