INTRODUCTION
Summer is here for good and so if you're a guy chances are you're also looking for ways to have fun like the good old days. Yes, things have changed (some for the better and some for the worst) but at least for me summer is not complete if you don't use a water pistol to have fun with your friends. Well since many of you have reached out and asked about whether or not the new battery powered water guns/blasters are worth getting it seems that I’m not in the minority. Today actually there aren't that many battery powered water guns around (next year there should be quite a few more) but the most popular brand in Europe is without doubt Spyra and with me today i have their top-end SpyraThree model.
Spyra reinvents the water gun afteryears of stagnation. As a new wave high-tech version for tech fans and thrilled adults. With individual water blasts for more power, range and precision. But water blasters are just the beginning. Spyra is going to up-level the whole outdoor adventure.
The SpyraThree is a battery powered water gun which thanks to its internal water tank (682ml) and pump is capable of building up enough water pressure to propel a total of 22 bursts of water up to 15 meters away. The SpyraThree is currently available in two colors (red and blue), features a sleek (yet futuristic look) plastic housing and comes ready with a tactical display (battery and water tank status), 10s automatic reload and as its name clearly suggests a total of 3 available shooting modes, burst (three blasts in quick succession) and open (semi auto) which have an effective range of 10.5 meters and league (PowerShot - lengthy trigger press) which can achieve the already mentioned 15 meter range. Lastly thanks to its internal 2000mAh rechargeable battery pack the SpyraThree is capable of lasting many hours without having to recharge it again (up to 2200 shots according to Spyra). So, time to find out whether or not the SpyraThree is the water blaster to spend your money on.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
Spyra send us the red & blue SpyraThree pair both of which arrived inside cardboard boxes the company logo and color selection at the front.
Company information is printed on the left side.
How to use steps are printed at the base of the box.
Opening the box reveals the SpyraThree inside a formed piece of cardboard.
Along with the SpyraThree inside the box you'll also find a USB-C charging cable, warning paper and the user manual.
THE SPYRATHREE
The SpyraThree weighs a total of 2.5Kg and measures 680mm in length, 240mm in height and 97mm in width.
Spyra has placed the mode selection slider on the top left side (a bit sturdier would be nice).
At the top we find the LCD display which keeps track of not only remaining battery life but also water.
To automatically reload the SpyraThree just immerse the front end into water and press the trigger.
The plastic aiming sights are good enough for a water blaster.
Even though i had no problem during my tests the trigger is a bit too easy to press.
The entire grip/handle surface is rubberized so the SpyraThree feels nice when holding it.
Moving at the rear we find a large butt which is very helpful since the SpyraThree does have a kick.
At the base of the grip/handle we find the USB-C charging port and the on/off button.
Opening the SpyraThree wasn't very easy but i really wanted to showcase its interior in this review.
Worth pointing out is that Spyra also has a convenient foldable container which you can fill with up to 20 litters of water (roughly 30 reloads).
CONCLUSION
I ended up using both SpyraThree guns for a total of two weeks and for the most part they did great. Their weight is balanced so they are not hard to use even for kids, build quality is good, battery life is plenty (perhaps not for 2200 shots as Spyra claims but still more than enough) and as for power well they are powerful enough for most scenarios. Yes, you may never see the advertised range of 15 meters with the PowerShot feature since that's closer to 12 but even that is plenty for a water blaster. The primary issue for me was the somewhat small tank capacity which only allows for a total of 22 shots and thus doesn't last nearly as long as I’d like. I do realize that a larger water tank would mean more weight (probably also a larger water blaster in general) but for "older" kids such as myself it would be great if we could at least have that option to choose from.
The SpyraThree water blaster by Spyra currently retails for USD179 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 165.79Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) so it may not seem as affordable for many people. Still considering its target audience (old “kids”) i don’t think price is a serious drawback. Overall, there’s not much more i can say about the SpyraThree, yes i would had liked a larger water tank but that aside it scores high enough to get the Golden Award.
