INTRODUCTION
Just like myself people who owned some of the very first large LCD monitors with 16:9 & 16:10 aspect ratios have a really hard time finding something equivalent today. Yes, there are quite a few OLED TVs (between 40-50 inches) that people use as monitors but for all those who care about the fine details these are not quite the same and as for OLED monitors the ones around are either not quite large enough (under 40 inches), they follow the 32:9 aspect ratio (not ideal for everyone) or are way too large (around 50 inches). Personally, I consider 16:9/16:10 the two most balanced aspect ratios around (ideal for both work and leisure) and well, last year EIZO released what might just be the solution for people looking for exactly that, the 43-inch FlexScan EV4340X.
EIZO (TSE: 6737), which means image in Japanese, is a visual technology company that develops and manufactures high-end visual solutions to enrich people in their professional and personal lives. EIZO offers total imaging solutions with a range of monitors, software, video capture, processing, and distribution solutions, cameras, and advanced integrated technologies to meet the specialized needs of customers in business, creative fields, healthcare, air traffic control, maritime, security & surveillance, and more. Headquartered in Hakusan, Japan, EIZO has R&D and manufacturing facilities in Japan, China, Germany, and the United States, and representation in more than 130 countries.
The latest FlexScan EV4340X is typically (for an EIZO screen) available in black and white colors and as its name clearly states it’s a 43-inch LCD monitor (42.5 inches to be exact - 108cm diagonal). This model is based on a 16:9 ratio IPS W-LED backlit panel (8bit) which sports a maximum resolution of 3840x2160p (4K/UHD) with a refresh rate of 60Hz, 5ms (GTG) typical response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350cd/m2 brightness and a pixel density of 104ppi. As with past models the FlexScan EV4340X also features a USB-C port which can be used both to provide power (94W max) and ethernet connectivity (1000 BASE-T) to compatible devices, data USB-C port (15W), two USB-A 3.2 ports, two 4W speakers (8W total), two HDMI ports (v1.4), single DisplayPort port (v1.3), Ethernet RJ45 Gigabit port, USB 3.2 host port and a 3.5mm audio output (headphones/speakers). As expected EIZO packs numerous technologies in their latest FlexScan EV4340X model such as a light sensor (auto brightness control), Picture by Picture (PbyP), Picture in Picture (PinP), EcoView mode (power and CO2 reduction), TUV certified flicker free, low blue light, non-glare matte panel and a minimum brightness of just 1cd/m2. Finally, EIZO typically covers the FlexScan EV4340X with the same impressive 5 year limited one as their previous FlexScan models and of course also offers their zero bright pixels warranty for a period of 6 months.
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
PACKAGING AND CONTENTS
EIZO once again uses a rather plain cardboard box to ship their monitor and so only the company logo is available on the front and the rear.
They've also started using new packaging made of recyclable materials (cardboard and newspapers) that extends even to the interior and even though I don't think it's quite as robust as their old one (especially for distant destinations) it gets the job done.
Along with the FlexScan EV4340X its rear cover, 2m long power cord and two detachable feet with their 4 mounting screws inside the box you'll also find a remote control, 2m long USB-B host cable, 2m long USB-C cable, 2m long DP cable, energy efficiency paper, assembly instructions, warning paper, warranty information paper and the user's manual.
THE FLEXSCAN EV4340X
It may not be the longest monitor to ever arrive in the office/lab but the FlexScan EV4340X is certainly massive measuring 966.8mm in length, 571mm in height and 89.9mm in depth.
The feet are easy to install, just unclip the rear covers, attach them with the bundled screws and that's it.
The feet are placed 733.7mm afar and increase the height of the screen from 571mm to 631mm and its depth from 89.9mm to 225.2mm.
Unfortunately, since the bundled feet don't offer any kind of adjustment some people may opt for a wall mount.
Both feet are made of aluminum and are painted with a textured gold color.
The EV4340X sits just 65mm from the desk.
The top and side bezel is 10mm in thickness whereas the bottom bezel is 28mm thick.
EIZO has equipped the FlexScan EV4340X with two 4W speakers (8W total) placed on both ends.
Almost at the center of the bottom bezel we find the auto brightness light sensor.
Turning the screen around we find a very long opening which can be used as a handle and the Vesa mounts (100x100/200x200) which can be covered using the bundled cover.
Needless to say, you can also cover the feet with the covers you removed earlier.
Typically, at the rear you can find the product serial number and factory roll out date.
The available connectors are located at the rear and include two HDMI v1.4 ports, DP 1.3 port, two USB-C ports, RJ45 Gigabit port, USB-B host port, two USB-A 3.2 ports, 3.5mm port, on/off button and the power port.
Even though it's nothing new the remote control bundled with the EV4340X is probably the most durable I've seen shipped with any PC monitor.
EV4340X MENUS
The screen has a total of 7 touch buttons at the front.
From these you can quickly change between modes and adjust the volume and brightness levels.
You can also access the main tab and it's sub tabs.
From the color tab you can select the color mode, adjust brightness and contrast levels and set the temperatures and gamma.
The overdrive function is placed inside the advanced tab along with the hue, saturation, and gain levels.
Screen ratio, sharpness, color format and input range are all accessible from within the signal tab.
Features like monitor ID, power save, power indicator brightness, USB and reset can all be accessed from the preferences menu.
The “green” features are placed inside the EcoView settings tab (once again this is a feature not used during my tests).
Typically, the OSD is available in 9 different languages.
Details about the screen are present inside the information tab (the power on hours is perhaps the most important one).
SCREEN INSTYLE SOFTWARE
Typically connecting the FlexScan EV4340X with your system via either the USB host ports, or the USB-C port allows you to access most of its menu features (and then some) via EIZO's Screen InStyle software.
From here you can adjust the color settings, adjust volume and enable/disable the EcoView settings, configure the layout of the screen for the split screen feature (very useful for people who need different areas for work), access mouse related settings and sync your settings with other EIZO connected screens.
You can also use the color briefcase (import custom color settings), enable/disable auto color mode (ties specific settings to specific applications), enable/disable the circadian dimming schedule, enable hotkeys, access the power management features, and connect to the server version of the InStyle Software (centralized).
VIEWING ANGLES / PICTURE QUALITY
Even though the FlexScan EV4340X is a massive screen with a not so great PPI ratio picture quality both in terms of detail/sharpness and colors is still very good.
IPS screens have always been the better choice when it comes to viewing angles so as you can see there's no image distortion/blur when you look from anywhere but the center.
There's quite a bit of backlight bleeding with the EV4340X but it's not really visible when playing games or watching movies (something which is rather easy to see in the above pictures).
TEST RESULTS
DATACOLOR SPYDER PRO MEASUREMENTS
By using the Spyder Pro (2024) Colorimeter by Datacolor i measure both the color gamut (SRGB and Adobe) and the brightness levels of the monitor at hand.
Here you can see results for Color and Luminance Screen Uniformity (instead of just listing results at 100% brightness I’m listing all of them - 50/67/83/100%).
Datacolor rates monitors based on their overall results, so it was decided to include this chart as well.
POWER CONSUMPTION
Power consumption may not be what most people look for when out to get a brand new monitor but at the end of the day it's still an important factor, so I do hope this is of interest to some of you.
CONCLUSION
Due to its size the FlexScan EV4340X was designed by EIZO primarily for use in control rooms, control centers, trading floors and similar work environments and since it's a 60Hz model with some uniformity and light bleeding issues it's honestly not a model I'd recommend purely for gaming. That being said I've been using for well over a month now not just for work and watching movies (for which it's very good) but also for gaming (very little ghosting, especially with overdrive at enhanced) and for me it does everything extremely well (then again, I never had high demands when it comes to refresh rate/fps and even though 60Hz is acceptable for me for many people it will not be). Power consumption is also very good for the size and even though this isn’t something many consumers care about it should make a whole lot of difference for large companies. On the other hand, features like the automatic brightness via the built-in light sensor, RJ45 Gigabit LAN, different mode/presets, sharpness, PbyP/PinP and even the lower blue light amount should appeal to professionals in most industries. The two speakers performed better than expected and should be very good for office use (not surprisingly nowhere near the Katana V2 soundbar I use) and as for the fixed stand/feet although they were something expected also due to the size of the screen but honestly, I do miss the versatility of the stand EIZO has been using for a while now with their FlexScan models. Finally, the very useful InStyle software, availability in both black and white colors and the 5-year limited warranty are things that certainly add to the overall appeal of the FlexScan EV4340X.
EIZO screens have always cost more compared to their competition not just because of the superior build quality but also the numerous technologies aimed towards professionals and of course the extended warranty. Well, the same is true for the FlexScan EV4340X since right now it retails for around USD2000 inside the USA and for 1737.98Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) a price tag which will almost certainly drive away casual consumers. Price aside the FlexScan EV4340X may not be the best screen out there but due to its massive size, 16:9 aspect ratio, picture quality and available features it obviously has its very own target audience and since it does deliver as advertised the Golden Award is in order.
